Founded back nearly 1,000 years, Marrakech has a story out of the ordinary, which it still retains a rich cultural heritage.
As historic heart of the city, the medina of Marrakech concentrates within it the monuments that will delight lovers of history and architecture. In the narrow streets, according to the various souks, discover the Ben Youssef Madrasa or Koubba Almoravid.
Not far from the Jemaa El Fna stands the Koutoubia Mosque, adjoined its famous minaret. More than a simple architectural element, this set has become the symbol of Marrakech.

KOUTOUBIA

Built by the Almoravids in the twelfth century, Koutoubia is now the symbol of Marrakech. It is one of the most impressive monuments of Marrakech and one of the most beautiful mosques in the Western Muslim world. Koutoubia is marked by a complex history: it is actually a double sanctuary with a minaret. The first Koutoubia was inaugurated in 1157, and the second and its minaret were built a year later by order of Abd El-Moumen. The two sanctuaries are distinguished by their innovative T-plan giving a prominent importance to the wall of the quibla (orientation of the prayer towards Mecca). Like a lighthouse, its iconic cut stone minaret, 77 meters high, is visible from afar because of the breakthrough of the city streets. A sober decoration, composed of carved reliefs and registers of white and green ceramic tiles, punctuating the upper parts of the facades and the pinnacle. The minaret served as a model for the Hassan Tower of Rabat and the Giralda of Seville.
